Note: Eli H. Dowell of Newton, Illinois enlisted as a Private in the 38th Illinois Infantry, Co. K during the Civil War. He was mustered on 17 August 1861. He was killed on 19 September 1863 at the Battle of Chickamauga. His parents recieved a pension--NARA Publication #T289--Pension of Eli H. Dowell: 26 Dec 1877 (application #234711) & June 28 1888 (application #242138; certificate #211440) Application lists relatives as Father: George Dowell, Jennette Dowell.

Eli H. Dowell of Newton, Illinois enlisted as a Private in the 38th Illinois Infantry, Co. K during the Civil War. He was mustered on 17 August 1861. He was killed on 19 September 1863 at the Battle of Chickamauga. His parents recieved a pension--NARA Publication #T289--Pension of Eli H. Dowell: 26 Dec 1877 (application #234711) & June 28 1888 (application #242138; certificate #211440) Application lists relatives as Father: George Dowell, Jennette Dowell.

Eli was killed at the battle of Chickamauga. He may be one of the unknown burials relocated to the Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Littleberry Dowell was the fifth child of ten children born to Micajah Dowell and Frances Meador Dowell. The Dowell family had moved from Bedford County, Virginia to Breckinridge County, Kentucky about 1805/1806.
Littleberry was married three times. He married Rachel Sipes in 1816. Littleberry married Elizabeth Adkisson 1826 in Breckinridge County, Kentucky. Littleberry married Sarah Payne 13 January 1832 in Breckinridge County, Kentucky.
Littleberry and Sarah owned a large farm three miles north of Garfield, Breckinridge County, Kentucky. Littleberry helped form the Freedom Cumberland Presbyterian Church in 1831 and served as Elder. He faithfully paid his taxes each year and saved the receipts. He paid $8.60 in taxes for 1833 and the last year that he paid taxes, 1871, the bill was $7.05. His highest tax bill was for the year 1839 when he was charged $13.98. On 23 April 1856, Littleberry received a Breckinridge County Land Grant for 25-1/2 acres on Shot Pouch Creek. Littleberry was the father of ten children, two by his first wife, two by his second wife, and six by his third wife
